GET /Speaking

Many technologists can feel intimidated by both in-person and hybrid or fully online experiences. Whether in-house or in the broader community.

Our program meets these worries head on.

GET /Speaking is run as three x 90min sessions.

We recognise that for many in our community, people don’t just have time or confidence to put forward a talk…they may not even opt in to attending tech conferences in the first place.

You’ve already taken the hardest step: to submit a talk in the first place. And congratulations if you’ve been accepted!
Now it’s a matter of turning that idea, talk title, and abstract into something meaningful.

In this session we’ll face into common fears of standing in front of an audience, and explore the ways you can counteract them.
We demonstrate the value of story-telling. We make it easy to learn. And practical to apply.

You leave with simple actions to prepare for your next talk.

We (re)build confidence by exploring personal branding. How your personality and life experiences can add colour and connection to your talk.
We go thru’ a process that reminds us of the unique voice we can bring to our achievements. It highlights the human factors that strengthen and differentiate our technical prowess and know-how.

We introduce ways to think about your audience, to help shape and structure your talk.

It’s an immersive all-day spa experience for the brain…in just 90 minutes.

Our final session is about putting the ideas to work. You’ll get to explore different ways of shaping a talk and practice it for your own.

You’ll get some critique. In a kind-but-candid and constructive way. A way that grows your confidence, while staying practical about what could resonate for a particular audience.

We’ll finish up with practical hints and tips for presenting technical topics. You go away with a draft submission for a talk. And a positive attitude to taking it forward.

To date, we’ve helped more than 400 people from our Women In APIs community get ready to speak through their involvement in our GET /Speaking program.

The program is run in a highly interactive, structured conversation format. You’ll get to grow your own professional network of fellow future speakers from other participants on the program.
